ABOUT THE ARTIST
I have been making art for 30 years. While I was an Optical Engineer working in the aerospace industry, art was a way to stay sane. I needed to be able to work with my hands to balance out the brain work of my job. My style has evolved over the years towards sculpture that retains the surface and patina of the natural raw material. I do not chisel the rocks, nor do I sand or finish the wood parts.

I have amassed a large cache of rocks and sticks that evoke the spirit of an animal or of a face. I combine this raw material in such a way as to highlight the face or illustrate the animal. I have gathered the raw materaial from my many camping and canoeing trips. At one point (1990 to 2005) I made a canoe trip each and every month for 15 years without a break. I am always on the lookout for interesting things that inspire me.

My work is varied and the raw material is found, either on the banks of a river or in an alley. I have used disgarded futon couches to make frames for pictures and bases for sculptures. My art can be considered environmental art in that I do not cut down live trees to get raw materials, all of my raw materials are found or have been discarded.

I am indebted to my lovely wife, Leslie Leip, for her patience and assistance. Thanks
